PRIDE OF MIND
Interview and Text by Yuki Sugie

PRIDE OF MIND
The Proud Aesthetics of Corruption
Interview and Text by Yuki Sugie

Pop star like Depeche Mode and Duran Duran that appeared in the UK during the early eighties became the backbone of New Wave. Having a style of original music that made use of synthesizers, and visuals that were subtle and high in a sense of the beautiful, they created a phenomenon called the "New Romantic Movement". That was 10 years ago. It is said often that "every ten years or so a generation comes around from what is old", and here in Japan, a band that hold much of that atmosphere has suddenly appeared. It is Pride of Mind, which released on 11/1 their first album, "Systems of Romance". They are originally from Osaka, but currently have moved their base of operations to Tokyo, and have started moving towards their next step. For those of you of the blood that likes New Romance, they are an outstanding talent that I would like to recommend.

-Pride of Mind, rather than doing "new music for the 90's", draws on the genre of New Wave which started in the early 80's in England with Depeche Mode, and it had a somewhat sentimental sound, doesn't it?

Fukuyama Atsushi: It is true that there is an awareness that we aren't doing something new. Rather, the big thing is doing something we simply like. Of course, this doesn't really sum up everything that we're doing, but I suppose I'm in particular a person who has his roots in that sort of thing, certainly.

-And Haruna-san, it's because you like that type of music as well?

Haruna Masaki: In my case, I didn't like rock and bands very much to begin with; I was a person who listened to classical music with piano or the recital of poetry, opera, french music, and such. Therefore, I never even dreamed back then I would be here now.

-In that case, what was your impetus for stepping into this world [of music]?

Haruna: I got to know Fukuyama-san after being introduced by a mutual aquaintance. When I met him and heard the music that he had started to create, I was forced to change the look on bands I had held until then. Therefore, the beginning was my assistance with keyboards in Fukuyama-san's band prior to this one, but before I knew it, I had become the vocal of this band.

-I see. And you, Ito-san?

Ito Masanori: In my case, I met Fukuyama-san in a shocking way. (laughs)

Fukuyama: First of all, when I and he (Haruna) decided what we were going to do, we felt we wanted one more member, and when we went to the launching of friend's band, he was there, and the moment I saw him, I thought, "This could work!" Looks-wise.

Ito: But isn't that just what love is? To fall for a person at first sight? (laughs)

Fukuyama: While we were looking for another member, we were considering not just outward appearance, but a person "just right" in a number of ways, but in that respect, he fit the image I had perfectly.

Ito: Before this band, I did student band, and during that time, I also sang. Therefore, I basically started keyboard and began to do digital editing with this band, actually.

-Is that true?!

Ito: Therefore, the taste for 80's music that Fukuyama-san had all along was, on the other hand, for me and Haruna-kun something that we were listening to as new and like 90's music.

Fukuyama: Our fashion and everything else, is second-hand and out-moded, isn't it? When it becomes 3rd and 4th-hand, it subsequently becomes cool and new. From that perspective, I think that perhaps what we are doing now has already become "new".

-And your division of responsibilities within the band?

Fukuyama: In creating the songs, the three of us write songs together but the majority are mine, and the lyrics are by Haruna.

-There's a fair amount of songs with English lyrics, but how do you decide on the balance with that?

Haruna: For the contents of the lyrics, whether they are in English or Japanese, I take inspiration for everything from Fukuyama-san's songs, and I'm just writing them in my own way. For example, if you want to know the reason why English comes up in this music, actually, I don't even know. This is a complete mystery, but...

-And Ito-san, what are your duties in Pride of Mind?

Fukuyama: It feels like it's 'total adviser', you know? I get the feeling he's the one who thinks the most objectively for us.

Ito: I don't have any concern for dealing with the credits for lyrics and composition. When you ask me what I want to do, I would say that rather than putting out a sound recording, I want to show you things raw.

Fukuyama: That's because, in reality, we personally consider Pride of Mind as a live band.

-But in the case of a band that primarily does digitally-edited music, aren't there some portions that that can't adapted in terms of size of the music or the parts of the tune, or possibly doesn't the feeling of the groove become difficult to put out?

Fukuyama: It's true that it can't be adapted, but depending on the day, the condition we are in is different, and that creates a kind of groove, doesn't it? Even if it doesn't, we don't really have to. In addition, in our case, we have a lot of songs, and depending on how you combine a variety of types of music in various forms, there is a possibility for each live to have a totally different expression. Therefore, even though we primarily do digitally-edited music, we will state definitely that we are a live band.

-Going beyond music, would you say that there seems to be a character assignment in this band?

Ito: This is a slightly strange example, but I suppose Haruna-san is heaven, Fukuyama is hell, and I am the real world that is neither, and which links the two together, certainly. (laughs)

-Fukuyama-san may or may not be hell, but it's clear to me that I would call Haruna-san heaven. (laughs)

Haruna: In calling me "heaven", that means I have separated myself from the floating world.** I'm a person who normally doesn't come into contact much with society. I hardly ever go out to play or go shopping, and I like being in my house.

[**Note: "ukiyo" is the floating world, a Buddist reference to the carnal day-to-day world that we live in. A person seeking enlightenment wishes to separate himself from the floating world, and number of famous buddist monks and poets have done so literally by living the life of a hermit. Haruna-san here means that he has done so by sequestering himself in his house. ^.^; ]

Fukuyama: On the other hand, as long as I'm not making songs, I don't like being at home, and as long as I have the free time, I get out.

-For the three of you individually, what sort of meaning does being in this band have?

Fukuyama: It's about the passage of life, you know? I don't think this is our last objective. Even so, right now, that's not our primary objective either.

Ito: I think that was true for all of us from the start. Really, we all have our various projects.

Haruna: I say this earnestly, mine is "youth". What you feel in life, what you devote yourself to, what is taken away from you, all these things are in this band.

-Well, in closing, could you explain frankly Pride of Mind's concept?

Fukuyama: I suppose it would be true aesthetics in the midst of corruption.
